Tomorrow’s Run and Whatnot

That’s right! For any of you who have failed to waste time online recently at local running boards, this is the final notice of the stunning Run Bitches! Half Marathon tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.

As mentioned in a previous post, we came up with this idea when Cheryl was looking for a HM timed right for our marathon next month in Birmingham. Oh dear. Did I just say “our” marathon? That’s right, jackasses. You heard it here first. After all of my trumpeting of NO MORE MARATHONS last year, here I go again. %$#@%*!!!

Nothing’s changed in terms of my love for the marathon. There still isn’t any. But this time, I’m running it for different reasons, which I shall divulge at a later date. Don’t fall off the edges of your seats in the meantime.

I know I should have done a Year End Wrap-Up! kind of post on Dec. 31st, blaring all my accomplishments and insights, but my main goals this past year were to stay under 2000 miles (Fail), remain injury free (FAIL!), and run one last 5K under 22 minutes (ALL TOGETHER, NOW….).

This is not to say that 2012 was a bad year, running-wise. It was actually one of the best in recent memory. Sure, I’ve slowed down some and have been enjoying the drastic energy plummets of menopause, but this year was gratifying in that it was less about manically killing myself for PRs, miles, or placement in races, and much more about having fun with running friends. I mean, any year you can form a running group called The Run Bitches has got to be a good year.

My favorite race of the year? The Santa Rosa Half Marathon where Cheryl finally stomped my ass. The race itself was nothing to write home about (stupid phrase #456), but Cheryl’s speed surpassing mine was a long time coming, and I don’t mind saying that I’ve been coaching her toward it for 3 years. It’s sweet to see things pay off, even when the payoff involves an ass-kicking.

My favorite workout of the year? Notes from my log on December 2nd: WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST BITCHES? Two cups of coffee, slight Runner Dorks Party hangover, red velvet cake, 6 L’il Smokies, a shot of Red Stag and a tempo run into the wind. HELLZ YEAH. The morning after our annual running party, Cheryl and I nailed a 7:50-pace tempo on the track. I may have still been drunk.

My favorite realization of the year? Amy sent me an email with the word “amazeballs” in it, and I thought she had made the word up. Then, last week on the Today show, I saw that word listed as one of the top most over-used in 2012. No one can accuse me of being even vaguely aware of popular culture!

My favorite thing to hate on public forums this year? Hmmmm….so much to choose from! But I think I’m going to have to go with the ongoing use of “nom nom” when discussing tasty food. Are you 3 or something? STOP IT. And, as always, I’m really despising the use of DH or DW or all things “D.” I mean who seriously calls their spouse “dear wife”? YUCK. And a runner-up has to be the use of “no?” at the end of a sentence, as in, “You had a great run today, no?” Who are you—Pepe le Pew?

My favorite thing to love this year? Without a doubt, coaching. I’m lucky in that the people I coach are consistent, hardworking, and don’t make up a lot of lame excuses like, “I dropped a beer can on my foot” (I used that once) or “I sneezed yesterday morning, so I’m skipping my tempo run tomorrow.” They have a sense of humor about running and tend to want to do more than less almost always. (Sometimes this makes me have to shake my finger in the air and frown.) But, most importantly, they keep getting PRs which drastically inflates my ginormous ego and my already bloated sense of superiority.

Way to get stuff done, Bitches! Here’s to an amazeballs 2013!
